Drummer John Molo has become a revered rhythm-creator in genres from jazz to rock. Saxophonist Bobby Read is a well-known jazz player who is also a sound engineer and producer. Guitarist Tim Kobza teaches at the University of Southern California when not on the road performing. Keyboardist JT Thomas fills his spare time producing TV and film music. Bassist Dan Conway is a wunderkind from NYC whose colorful low-end foundations bring vibrance to the sound of Modereko. The result of their collaboration is a unique band that values the unknown areas of improvisation as much as it does the construction of towering compositions.

Featuring three musicians who''ve honed their skills as members of Bruce Hornsby''s band on drums, keyboards and saxophone, an accomplished California college teacher on guitar, and an up and coming New York City bassist, MODEREKO pulls from a melting pot of influences for a unique blend of songs on Solar Igniter. In Their second album on Harmonized Records, Solar Igniter brings forth fourteen fresh sounding tracks that scamper through funk, jazz, rock, reggae, middle-eastern, and well, almost everything else you can think of.
Drummer John Molo (Bruce Hornsby, Phil Lesh & Friends, Mike Watt) shines on tracks like "Travel by Balloon," which also showcases the unique singing and guitar playing of special guest Keller Williams. Williams, who is featured on three songs on the album, also steps to the vocal forefront in "Getaway Float." On one of the most exciting and original tracks, Williams'' scat vocals make way for a catchy chorus over the winding horn lines of Bobby Read. From the 70''s funk of "el Kabong" to the haunting take on Hall of the Mountain King in "35 Rooms," MODEREKO laces catchy melodies with intricate layered harmonies. Their instrumental prowess is displayed in songs such as "Miracles," which clearly show this bands'' improvisational abilities. Read, trading lines with guitarist Tim Kobza and keyboardist J.T. Thomas is one of the high points of the album.
While the songs on Solar Igniter are somewhat stylistically scattered, the album remains very interesting as a whole, with each track venturing into a new and different territory than the one that precedes it. - Glide Magazine
