Details:
Mojo Collins was born in Raleigh, N.C. in 1944 during the end of the second world war. He was raised in a large family of seven. His father Wild Bill Collins was a professional musician and young Mojo learned valuable lessons at the feet of his mentor. To this day he still credits his father and grandmother Lorain as being his main influences in both style and delivery. His first guitar was a cigar box with rubber bands strung over it sometime around 1949. After showing his father that he truly had an intrest in music and was serious about it, he received his first real guitar in 1950. It was a Stella by Harmony which costs around $15.00 case included. He has now been performing for over five decades and remembers his father saying, you only get out of it what you put into it. This and the promise of a great future in music is what has motivated Mojo through all of the good times and the bad. His father was very strict on young Mojo and made him practice in his room for hours on end before letting him perform for family, friends, and relatives. To this day he still practices everyday to keep his arthritus in check and also his arth-leftus. If you have had the pleasure of seeing him perform then you know that he puts his heart and soul into every note that he plays and every word he sings comes from the depths of his very being.
Not many people can say that they opened for such acts as Janis Joplin and Big Brother and the Holding Company, Fleetwood Mac, Steve Miller, Santana, The Greatful Dead, Muddy Waters, Leon Redbone, The Spinners, Ike and Tina Turner, Sly and the Family Stone, Blue Cheer, Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs, Stevie Ray Vaughn, the list goes on and on, he has toured the U.S. many times and even did an opening stint for the origianl Yardbirds with Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, and Eric Clapton. He was once signed to Fillmore Records out of San Francisco, and was managed by none other than the greatest rock promoter ever Bill Graham. He has many releases on major labels and also his own Jomo Records.
In 1999-2000 he received the prestegious songwriting Fellowship through the N.C. Arts Council and just finished a new CD entitled THAT OLE CAROLINA TRADITION. Mojo loves his home state and is known for helping save a few national landmarks like the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, and Jockey''s Ridge State Park. On January 18th 2004 he plans on releasing a box set of over 35 years of recordings. To date he has over 19 CD''s in circulation with a few underground ditties somewhere in europe... Even though he is almost over the hill, he is a vital and important performer who still loves the thrill of playing live in front of an audience, one who appreciates that Mojo Collins has arrived as an Artist, not just another guitarist who burns rubber...
