My Bio: My name is Michael Davis and I created DISTOPIATE. I began playing bass in 1992. I taught myself for the 1st 2 years, learning all I could from tab books, by ear, and from various bass method books and videos such as “Flea''s Spontaneous Improvisation“, etc.. One year after I began playing bass, I played with a drummer and guitarist in a high school original/cover rock project called Solitary Judgment, then went on to play with Broken Plow, another original/cover rock band, a year later. I took part in writing several original songs with both of those bands. I began Jazz Bass lessons with Golder O''Neill (a graduate of Berkley College of music in Boston Massachusetts, with a master''s from Shenandoah) at Shenandoah University in Winchester, VA the same year I started with Broken Plow in 1994. Broken Plow broke up sometime in ''95 as I continued my lessons and began playing for the high school jazz band my senior year ''95-''96. I received the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award as well as an academic, and talent scholarship to Shenandoah University in which I attended 1 year from 1996-1997. During my time at Shenandoah I learned an intense amount, earning 31 credits with a G.P.A. of 3.5. I took classical theory, jazz theory, sight singing, ear training, class piano, bass lessons, upright bass lessons, stage band, played in several jazz combos, and played for the Senior Jazz Ensemble my 2nd semester. I also played in a jazz trio and played the local coffee house''s. As I was attending Shenandoah I began playing guitar. As my love for the guitar grew, my interest in bass faded, so I decided to pursue music on my own from there. The summer of 1997, after leaving Shenandoah, I played bass for the Galen Hines Blues Trio, doing his original material as well as covers from greats like Stevie Ray Vaughn. Then in 1998 I fully pursued my own music, began writing lyrics and writing drums on a drum machine. From "98-''07 I 4-tracked several original tunes (writing and tracking drum machine, bass, rhythm guitar, and lead guitar), and also began writing lyrics/spoken word. The only jazz I played after Shenandoah was in the practice room. During these years I honed in my sense of rhythm and time signatures by counting to several Prog bands such as Mr. Bungle, Dream Theater, Meshuggah, etc.. I transcribed hundreds of songs and solos by various artists such as: Metallica, Anthrax, Megadeth, King’s X, Van Halen, Pantera, Lamb of God, Steve Vai, Led Zeppelin, etc. I began singing in 2003 when I moved to Boise, Idaho. I played bass/lead vocals, then lead guitar/lead vocals with Pilot Error for 1 year, and also was the lead vocalist of the classic/modern rock cover band Wild Card for 1 ½ years shortly after I left Pilot Error. I have re-recorded my original material with vocals and now have a complete album mixed by Jason Ringelstetter and mastered by Chris Parks at The Tonic Room in Boise, ID.
