Details:
Dorkstar is an energetic original Austin rock band with a versatile sound. Their style is characterized by a driving rhythm section, melodic vocals, and provocative guitar licks. Somewhat eclectic, Dorkstar’s songs range from soft-acoustic to garage punk, with song subjects from music industry commercialism to making breakfast. Their debut album, “Commercial Rock”, was released in March 2005. “Tryptophan”, released in June of 2007, shows the evolution of the band’s talent and style with even more diversity.

Dorkstar is a collective mix of each member’s experience and astonishingly diverse influences. The voice of the band belongs to Russell Boyd, who plays guitar and is a founding member of the band. His singing is influenced by a mix of grunge-era artistic sensibilities and the soulful melodic styles of singers like Joe Cocker, Jim Croce, Paul McCartney, and all things Motown, which blend well with chunky riffs and solo’s both bluesy and jazzy. A career musician for 9 years, Russell has garnered the respect of his peers and rabid fans through solo guitar shows and searing piano bar sets all across Texas.

The band’s backbone comes from Brian Short, drummer, backing vocalist, and founding member. Brian is a third generation drummer who discovered his talent at the tender age of 6. After surviving high school drum line, completing a degree in RTF, he honed his skills in Recording Engineering, Audio Post Production, and Live Sound, serving bagels and coffee to the likes of Nine Inch Nails and Aerosmith. After moving to Austin and meeting singer/songwriter Russell Boyd, the beginnings of Dorkstar were formed. With a ferocious backbeat and rock solid timing, Brian’s influences include Stuart Copeland, John Bonham, and David Grohl.

Wade Roberts began playing bass in San Antonio ten years ago and quickly developed his strong sense of rhythm. Although he cut his teeth emulating bass players such as Les Claypool of Primus, Wade has the unique ability to know when it’s time to play something fancy and when to hold the rhythm down His technical ability has allowed Dorkstar to remain a three-piece band and sound like a five-piece.

Having attained radio play, excited fans, and buzz all over Texas, Dorkstar still travels around the state doing shows several times a month. Already working on and performing new songs for a third album, the band continues to evolve as they move into their sixth year together.
