"Naomi''s Fancy" is a music group based out of Traphill, NC, although the members range from Pinnacle, NC to Fancy Gap, Virginia. The group plays traditional Irish and Scottish music, with some rock influences. The group was formed in October of 1997 as a jam session, and played their first gig in November of that year. They have stayed quite busy since then.
The group consists of five members - Naomi Orr, Stanley Widener, Craig Sexton, Phil Sexton, and Randel Candelaria. Naomi plays the harp, flutes, and penny whistle. Randel Candelaria is the resident fiddler. He also plays the shuttle bagpipes, guitar, mandolin, and recorder. Phil and Craig Sexton are father and son. Phil plays the Uilleann bagpipes, flute, and penny whistle. Craig plays the guitar, mandolin, and bodhran. Stanley Widener plays the bouzouki, guitar, tenor banjo, and penny whistle (although not all at the same time). He has also recently taught at a guitar workshop with nationally known instrument-maker Wayne Henderson.
"Naomi''s Fancy" has played widely through Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. They have entertained at many various bars, coffeehouses, parties, weddings, colleges, contradances, and festivals. Their credits also include playing at the Sycamore Shoals Celtic Fest, Historic Bethabara Park, for the Irish Festival sponsored by Wake Forest Press, the High Point Theater, Dorton Arena, the "Dance of Nations" at VA Tech, local cable TV specials, and for the "Celtic Winds" radio program on NPR.
