On "Previously Engaged", Chicago''s Naughty Candy present a seven track cd of tight, jangly indie-pop. The harmonized female vocals, carefree pace, and sixties folk-pop influence bring to mind Belle and Sebastian and "Mars Audiac Quintet" era Stereolab. The instruments have been carefully arranged as warm organs and distant slide guitars delicately ornament the drums, bass, and rhythm guitar without overwhelming the songs. "Waiting" opens the disc at a lilting tempo with clean, vibrant vocal harmonies and bright plucky guitar melodies. On "Hurricanes" Naughty Candy quickens the pace a bit and keeps it there for the duration of the disc. These later songs are driving without being washed in testosterone much like the anti-machismo indie rock of Unrest. The songs are tight, well written, catchy and to the point (only one song passes the three minute mark). "Previously Engaged" is a very enjoyable and refreshing listen; hopefully the first of many from Naughty Candy.
