The five members of The Neon Calm met in 1999 at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. After various musical incarnations, the group has been recording and performing under The Neon Calm for over three years. Holed-up in a rehearsal space for much of October 2001 to May of 2002, The Neon Calm created new music, music that pushed past their own former creative boundaries and encompassed the full range of their individual styles and influences. In May of 2002, they selected nine songs to make up their debut record, an emotional tour de force entitled My Perfect Muse.
The songs of My Perfect Muse touch upon a variety of moods and genres. Frogs'' and Siegel''s tight-locking foundation lightly keeps time one minute, and pounds with ferocity the next. Leifer''s intricate guitar work is at its best, balancing lush acoustic chordal parts with screaming solos, while Damico''s keys round out the sound with simple, but articulate musicality. On top of it all, Cogman''s raspy delivery is both memorable and poignant, reinforcing lyrics centered around the album''s main theme: the deterioration of relationships.
The lyrics of My Perfect Muse draw the listener into a story about a relationship slowly falling apart. This story grabs you and doesn''t let go; from the optimistic beginning in which the two people meet ("Cerulean Song") to the heart-wrenching dialogue of a break-up at the close of the record ("Ultra Far-Sightedness"), My Perfect Muse dramatizes the way things seem to fall apart with poetic intensity all set to the landscape of ambient rock guitars and driving rhythms. My Perfect Muse is an album like they used to make. A cohesive piece of art from start to finish. Music and lyrical themes pervade throughout, and snippets of spoken lines and tape recorded clips also pepper the record as it moves from start to finish. While individual songs stand on their own, My Perfect Muse can only fully be appreciated when experienced as a whole.
Since the release of My Perfect Muse, The Neon Calm have relocated from Boston to Los Angeles, playing stages from coast to coast over the years. With each new performance, the band has turned on more and more fans to their unique mix of hypnotic melody and glorious noise. For fans of good rock music, The Neon Calm and My Perfect Muse provide more than enough loud power chords and catchy choruses. And for the more lyrically-minded, Cogman''s poetry burns ever with a courageous display of emotion and scar-showing.
