Edgewise is the brainchild of Edmonton based singer/songwriter Matthew Ryan Woods. After years of touring with Funkafeelya, Rake, and countless others, the time had come to form his own band. "I''ve been writing songs for years, and I felt that it was time to record an album and tour. I''ve always wanted to put a band together and do my own thing. I''ve been fortunate to have some great players backing me up. Edgewise is turning into quite the collective."
Matthew recorded the album at his home studio. "I have always wanted to record a full-length, and take on the challenge of producing as well. When I realized that I didn''t have the kind of money needed to take it to a studio, I simply made my own studio. I learned to be resourseful and rented all the gear I could." Matt can be heard on lead vocals, and he played all the guitar parts and drums/percussion as well. "I started playing drums at an early age, but soon after took to the guitar, and started writing my own songs. I''ve always wanted to pursue this and start making records." Matt also invited Wes Autin (Funkafeelya) to play bass, Chloe Albert to sing harmonies, and Ben Kaplan (Chevelle, Sara McLachlan, Hedley) to contribute organ, clavinet and keyboard parts. "Adding such talented players really strengthened the record. It all turned out better than I could have hoped for."
When the time came to mix the record, Matt decided to hire veteran Vancouver engineer Scott Ternan to take over. "Scott has worked on a lot of albums you''ve heard of," he adds "albums by Sam Roberts, Matthew Good and 54-40 to name a few. With his experience, and great ears, the songs began to unravel nicely. Scott has a really creative mind. Often times he knows what''s best for the songs and his style has a certain edge to it. He''s a rare breed in my books." The album was mixed over 8 days at Farm Studios in downtown Vancouver (owned by well-known producer Garth Richardson). Before tackling the role of producer, Matthew had already logged over 1,000 gigs as a live/session musician playing all styles of music. From coffeehouses to stadium tours, Matthew had done it all. It was time to forge ahead.
Matthew Ryan Woods is gearing up for what could be big things in 2008. The new record is already making waves around Edmonton, and is selling faster than expectations. "When you tell people you''re making a record, and like, a year goes by and you''re still working at it- that''s a lot of time to hype it up," he laughs, "I''d like to think it''s planned that way, but it''s just that these things take time. You can''t compromise your standards and you definitely can''t rush things. I want to have a record that I can listen to as well."
When asked about ''life on the road'', one paricular memory stands out in his mind: while playing drums in Rake, the band landed some huge shows with Live and Nickelback. "The first thing I remember from those shows was meeting the stage manager. The very first thing he said to us was ''It''s a real double-edged sword. On one hand you get to open for Nickelback. On the other hand there aint nobody here to see you.'' I laughed my tail off. Pulling up in a van next to all the tour buses says it all", he laughs. "we may have looked out of place, but we felt right at home come showtime."
