Somewhere while traveling a very well worn path as a “utility” guitar player, there was an opening for me to find the music that is uniquely mine.
I’ve played for and with a few big names, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry. Laurie Lewis, among others, in many musical genres, folk to jazz. I tried hard to fit in to the overall sound, picking up or faking styles as necessary.
I was in the woods at some ancient stones with a friend near Bremen, Germany when she remarked to me, “You see those two people walking up? I know one of them.” The man turned out to be the translator for a friend of mine. How random is that?
As we were chatting, I told Oliver about my music. And he told me, “1 want to book a blues tour for you in Germany”. “Uh, yeah! I’d love to.”
Out of the demo for that tour, my first, solo album of blues was released, ‘The Great Blues Sea”.
But something strange happened on the way to a blues album. While working out parts for the album, I started re-exploring fingerstyle alternate tunings on acoustic guitar.
Fast forward to the present: I’m playing, and composing, experimenting, and learning, gigging, and lately, teaching these sometimes experimental, hopefully always musical sounds.
These pieces are a combination of percussive techniques, fingerstyle, various types of harmonics, standard and non-standard tunings, drones, moving harmonies, and various compositional forms and devices.
In while working on this material, I released a live album of singer-song writer material accompanied by acoustic guitar improvisations, “Love Like a Stream”. And, of course. I’ve continued to record tracks for other folks along the way.
I’m fascinated by the sounds that steel and wood combined with two hands, one soul, can express. “The Source” is pure; just one guitar played by one person - what are the possibilities in that?
In a way, I’ve come back to my source, one of the places where I began musically; a source of clear, refreshing musical waters, a holy well of the “Soul Art Dance”.
