HERE IT IS! I’d been trying to write a new & special Christmas song for years, & with HEY SANTA! I can now say I have. I penned this last Christmas eve (2007). Like all of my songs, it just came out- nearly intact- as if from a SOURCE much higher than me.
I think of HEY SANTA! as being another new & small part of that special category of songs called Christmas Blues. Of these, I pay special homage to MERRY CHRISTMAS BABY by the great CHARLES BROWN, as being among the best of this group. He also co-wrote PLEASE COME HOME FOR CHRISTMAS which I first heard on a record by EDGAR WINTER, a tune we also covered on the HEY SANTA! CD. But of all of the great blues artists, I would be remiss not to give credit to my all time favorite (not an easy thing to proclaim), the incomparable JIMMY REED. While he didn’t do a Christmas blues song per se, that I’m aware of, I’d like to think that some of song writing flair is in this song.
As with all MR. VEGAS MAN products, I have been blessed with having access to some of the finest musicians on the planet, many of whom reside right here in lovely Ann Arbor, Michigan USA,
On this song, maybe you can hear The One & Only PETER MADCAT RUTH - blues harpist extraordinaire- as he helps kick this thing off. PAT CRONLEY- -The People’s Choice- keeps it rolling with his very special touch on the baby grand. SCOTT MARION plays the drums & doesn’t miss a beat. Duh.... he IS the drummer. He better not.
But this track really features the superb guitar playing of one ERIK KLUIBER. Have you listened to this song? Tell me, CAN HE PLAY? OR WHAT? Honestly, I don’t know much else about ERIK. I was referred to him by my exceptional co-producer & recording engineer, ELI BROWN of SickBoy Productions. ELI & ERIK are band mates in the number one heavy metal group in the Midwest, OVERLOADED. If you ever get the chance to catch their act, be ready to HOLD ON TIGHT because it’s one HECKuva ride! ( Remember MR. VEGAS MAN is G-Rated, & while you’re at it don’t forget to check out his alter-ego COPPER TOM -who specializes in sweet sounds for the kiddios!).
