From Des Moines, Iowa comes Beati Paoli (pronounced BEE- ah-TEE POW-lee), a popular rock quartet that straddles the precarious line between indie grit and theatrical pop flair. Beati Paoli has been steadily building a fanbase with their electric live performances, playing with the likes of British Sea Power, Man Man, and Asobi Seksu, as well as numerous other bands from across the region and the country.
Beati Paoli''s humble origins can be traced back to the autumn of 2005, when friends Gregory Goode (vocals), Scott O''Gara (drums), and Ryan Meier (bass) decided to build upon the foundations of their myriad prior musical endeavors and began writing and rehearsing new material. Joined by Cecil Skrlandt (guitar) in 2006, the lads'' work carried on in earnest: In addition to numerous live engagements throughout the year (spanning the course of California to Rhode Island and many points inbetween), BP also recorded their first E.P., entitled Penny Dreadful, which was released through Des Moines'' Barely Bias Recordings. The band spent most of 2007 supporting the release and writing and recording songs for its full-length follow-up. The fruits of these labors can be found on their debut album, A Sense Of Urgency. Produced entirely by the band and engineered by Mr. O''Gara, Urgency features ten brand new recordings, ranging from the summer-pop of "Girl Friday" and the epic melancholia of "You Are My Megalodon", to the snotty brassiness of "While We''re Young" and the bad acid trip that is "Vulgarity Drifting Diary". The record, which will be released in the summer of 2008, will also be the inaugeral release for the band''s new label, The Noising Machine.
Listening to Beati Paoli on record and experiencing them live are two separate worlds, both worth living in. The recordings are full of experimental instumentation and carefully textured arrangements, ideal soundscapes for headphone scrutiny. Live, the band''s mix of rhythmic precision and reverb-drenched guitars coalese to create an experience notably different but equally vital to the idea of what Beati Paoli is and what Beati Paoli can do. Both act as essential outlets for the restless drive that brought these four young men together in the first place under a name that evokes curiosity, creativity, and above all a distinct point of view: Beati Paoli.
