If ever an artist has lived the life of "music at its roots", then it''s Nik Phillips. Being engulfed with acoustic music through the discovery of Jackson Browne, James Taylor and Jim Croce at an early age, Nik left school and started on the road, performing in his own style and has never stopped.
His ability to perform over 250 shows a year has enabled him to build a solid and supportive grass roots fan base, which has even grown from one generation to the next.
And the gigs have been many and varied. From the local performances, to the Pier at Santa Monica California (for the Soccer World Cup), the Rainbow on Sunset, two State of Origin performances in front of over 50000 people and regular appearances at Ballymore Stadium before more then 20000 people. (Nik wrote both the Queensland State of Origin song as well as the official Queensland Reds track)
Also performances with General Cosgrove and Prime Minister Howard at welcome home events for troops from East Timor deployment. (This came about through the song "Come Back Soon" which was used heavily by the Defence Dept during the East Timor operation. The song was involved with projects which raised over $70000 for two orphanages in East Timor).
This independent drive has also been carried over into the recording studio, where Nik has recorded 5 albums.
Nik always believes the best judge of a song is an audience, and that is where his are constantly being refined.
"I couldn''t imagine life without a stage. There is a certain addiction involved with trying to improve your craft night after night. Constantly searching for that something which may take your audience to somewhere they haven''t been before. Or perhaps somewhere they long to be again."
Over the years Nik''s music has settled into a very comfortable acoustic place. It is with great anticipation that those already familiar with Nik Phillips look forward to his upcoming selection of stories and emotions on his new soon to be released CD. We sense that it is time for a lot more people to discover the secret we already know.
