"I want to talk to you about writing a song."
It was August 2003, and Sean sheepishly approached his brother Ryan about writing some music to go with this set of words mysteriously entitled "That Day in June." Struggling with stagnating creativity after self-producing an instrumental metal album, "Out of this World," Ryan needed a new direction, and this little outburst provided the necessary kick in the pants.
After a few days, Sean shuffled back into Ryan''s basement dungeon with a second track, "Hurry Back." Again the brothers put the song together. Punches may or may not have been thrown.
What good are a couple of tunes without a band? After scouring the local area for band members, the brothers Formato dug up two schlubs who couldn''t even play their instruments. They made such an impact, that their names have been subsequently forgotten.
Feeling down and out, about a year went by before Ryan (Swag) and Brian came into the fold. Ryan auditioned the pair on his own and brought them on. The only missing component: a bassist. The (not quite) Rebels lucked upon James after another week, and Not Quite Rebels emerged as a bunch of guys with songs scrawled onto pieces of loose leaf paper and a couple of catchy guitar riffs.
After a few months of intense practice, refinement of the songs, and composition of new tunes, Not Quite Rebels was ready to produce an E.P. The ten tracks on Schoolyard Riot include the original two, as well as eight others that were produced by the band. Even Swag had lyrical input, and he''s basically mute.
And here we are. Playing shows, rocking out in the basement, and looking for more ways to bring their music to the masses, Not Quite Rebels continues on its quest for glory, honor, and criminal records.
Not Quite Rebels is a project sprung from a single idea: a song isn''t just a song, it''s a chance to connect with your audience on a personal level. Our influences include The Smiths, The Cure, The Misfits, Alkaline Trio, and the Descendents.
We are from eastern Suffolk County, Long Island, and look forward to tearing up the local scene!
