As I am writing this piece for a promotional, I am sitting on a swing looking out over Finlay Park. The morning is beautiful and lush greenery bends in the breeze as it seems to dance to the sounds of the fountain. The skyline hovers above like a protective father keeping watch over his children...and the children are there...beginning to stir, appearing in the mist of morning as they awaken to another day of life on the street.
It was on this same swing that I wrote the chorus to We Can Light The Way nearly a year ago. I just moved from the suburbs into the city and after a long day of unpacking boxes I decided to take my golden retriever for a walk through the park. We only made it as far as this swing at the top of the hill. The park was unusually crowded that day and I debated whether or not to take Shiloh out into the mass of people there. Soon I began to realize that these were not just any people. These people had come here to eat perhaps the only meal that they would have that day. This was our city''s homeless and I was face to face with them for the first time. For me it was a completely overwhelming experience. I wondered how in a nation of such great wealth that this could even happen and I felt ashamed that much of my day was spent worrying about my weight. I, like many of you work out with a trainer and diet because I have too much to eat. I saw children and mothers wandering....eyes that seemed to look out into nothing and my heart ached for them. Later that day I picked up the notepad that I had scribbled those words on earlier and I began to write. It didn''t seem like conscious thought but an hour later the song was finished. I believe that for a brief moment I was allowed to become a channel through which the love and the compassion and the grace of God became an expression. I am humbled that for whatever reason, I was chosen to pen these words. What an amazing experience this has been.
My hope is that this song will stir in you the passion to become "a beacon of grace". It is our duty and it should be our honor to extend a loving hand to those in need. I truly believe that if we work together we can light the way.
