For their critically acclaimed debut, About Leaving, the band called upon legendary engineer Tom Mallon (American Music Club, Toiling Midgets) and local players Josh Housh (Nickel Beer Riot) on upright bass and Charlie Hall (The Trouble With Sweeney) on keyboards. Our Lady of the Highway formed in Oakland, CA over Labor Day weekend of 1996 by Dominic East and Andrew Gerhan. As a teen, Gerhan strummed for punk bands in Albany, NY while East wrote songs for his friends about their experiences in the Berkshire Mountains. The two knew they had more in common than their bicycle messenger jobs.
The sound they have developed ranges from the guitar-driven energy of Husker Du to the delicacy of Joni Mitchell. And while at times heart wrenching, absorbing East''s lyrics will take you back to a time when Paul Westerberg gave a make.
The band has evolved in volume from an acoustic duo to its current incarnation as a judiciously amplified foursome. With the addition of drummer David Clifford and guitarist turned bassist Grey Wedeking, Our Lady has quickly became a favorite at Bay Area warehouse parties and clubs opening for everyone from Tommy Guerrero to American Music Club.
To keep the pace with an expanding fan base, Our Lady of the Highway just finished recording a new album entitled "Beauty Won''t Save Us." The project involved famed Bay Area engineer/producer Dylan Magierek (Mark Kozelek, Erlend Oye, Call and Response) and was recorded at San Francisco'' Closer
Recording Studios. The new record is less reflective and embodies more of the fire brand live sound that has bounced off walls for years at clubs from Oakland to Seattle.
The band is currently on tour in support of About Leaving.
