Way back when in the early days of middle school, friends Kyle Elkins and Nick Hosford went out and bought electric guitars. Shortly after that, their friend and classmate Sean Zuidgeest decided to join them as they sat around strumming. Sean was blessed with a set of strong vocal chords and a deepness of thought, and was soon thinking up lyrics to accompany the guitar ditties. With the idea of forming a real band in the minds of the three guys, Kyle eventually switched to electric bass. A drummer was found and the group immediately connected. The beginnings of a band were in sight. As the guys experimented with their different styles and influences, their ideas were blended into original songs. When the first gig was booked, they suddenly needed a name for their band. Suggestions were thrown around for what to call themselves, and the name The Outer Vibe was chosen.
Local venues presented many opportunities for The Outer Vibe to join the rock music scene of Grand Rapids. As they played at annual events, bars, and parties, the people of Grand Rapids discovered this new and attractive group of energetic teenagers. With the release of an 8-track demo in 2001, it didn''t take long for fans to emerge, and word spread quickly through the city about The Outer Vibe.
The talent level of the band steadily grew, as did the size of the crowds following the band. Kyle, Nick, and Sean graduated from high school and decided to study both music and recording technology at GRCC. Meeting other students with different levels and genres of music experience inspired the band to expand their sound by inviting guest performers to play and sing at shows. Around this time, there was talk of their soon-to-be recorded debut CD. The band took a break from shows during the summer of 2003 and mixed, mastered, and recorded "Pretty Good" all on their own... the band''s first EP.
Not long after that, the band members felt it was time to add something new and different. They asked fellow music students Lisa Kacos and Luis Trejo to join the lineup; Lisa playing trumpet and keyboards and Luis taking over on the drum set. The addition of new instruments and musical styles made a huge impact on the band''s original sounds, giving The Outer Vibe an even more unique distinction.
The Outer Vibe continues to strive for excellence and higher levels of talent while spreading the word of their music throughout the region.
