JOHNSON COUNTY SNOW

Planted and grown in the same fertile Eastern Iowa soil lovingly tended for a generation by such nationally respected roots mavens as Greg Brown, Bo Ramsey and Dave Moore (and substantially augmented almost a decade ago by David Zollo), Kelly Pardekooper is poised to join the area''s perennial bumper crop with Johnson County Snow on Trailer Records.

Something of a late-comer to the music world, the 32-year-old Pardekooper made his recording debut in 1998 with 30-Weight--a promising, homemade singer/songwriter effort. He hooked up with hotshot guitarist/fledgling luthier Dustin Busch over the following year, and--in short order--the duo hijacked the flexible, crack rhythm section of bassist Atom Robinson and tub-thumper Matt Winegardner. Seemingly overnight, the Devil''s House Band was a living thing.

Vigorously colliding country, rock, folk, Americana and alt-country (with ominous, spaghetti-Western overtones), Kelly Pardekooper & The Devil''s House Band have gelled with jaw-dropping rapidity.

Kelly''s concise, regional-specific original tunes are devoid of fancy or fakery--they ring true because they''re drawn from Pardekooper''s particular space and times, and the band makes ''em jump.

Evidence of that can be confirmed by those who caught their dates at Austin, Texas'' prestigious SXSW showcase this year, and the group has garnered further confirmations by reaching the semi-finals of Musician magazine''s "best unsigned band" search, then securing an invitation to perform at the tres cool New Orleans Cutting Edge Music Conference in September of 2000.

Once content to languidly strum and serenade a crowd from a stool, Pardekooper has found the joy of goosing a room into a dance frenzy with the aid of his high-octane compadres, and his finely-crafted tunes have likewise been crystallized and focused by their energetic input.

Johnson County Snow brings together ten Pardekooper originals in an emotionally-compressed package of personal revelations and big-hearted, small town, lovingly detailed adventures which--produced by Dave Zollo--are as immediate and pressing as this morning''s alarm clock.

The sound is crisp and punchy, and homeboy Bo Ramsey (Greg Brown, Lucinda Williams, Kate Campbell, R.B. Morris, Kevin Gordon, Teddy Morgan, et al) lends his guitar wizardry to "Upside Down" and "Long White Dress."

This biscuit''s a beauty, my friends, and Kelly & Co. are only just getting started. Listen to the tales tangled up within the hip-shakes, and you''re bound to get the message that a snowstorm can be a very groovy thing.

Sometimes, that snow falls from the sky; other times, it''s all in yer head.
