Details:
Patrick Cress'' Telepathy (PCT) has expanded the boundaries of traditional jazz to help create new excitement in America''s original art form. The group''s energy and personality, reminiscent of 60''s hard bop jazz and exemplified by John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and Eric Dolphy, captures the attention of a diverse and dynamic audience. PCT''s root in tradition and cerebral elements attract jazz and classical aficionados alike, while it''s rock influences attract a much younger demographic. Together, the collective audience repeatedly engages in our music and witnesses the fabric of a strong San Francisco jazz scene.
Founded in March 2002, Patrick Cress, saxophones, conceived Telepathy out of his many influences, including Ornette Coleman and Tim Berne who represent a true homage to the traditions of jazz while pushing musical boundaries. Graduating with a bachelor''s at the University of Michigan, Cress was schooled by Donald Walden''s strict jazz theory and Donald Sinta''s brilliant classical mind. Out of this and a seventeen-year passion for music, Cress manifested these influences into a specific original concept.
Tim Bulkley, drums, represents the very heartbeat of the San Francisco bay area jazz scene. He''s played with numerous Bay area greats, including Anton Schwartz and Mike Zilber, as well as national acts like Stanley Jordan and Smith Dobson Sr. Bulkley''s experience and energy give PCT its driving edge.
Aaron Novik, bass clarinet, brings his quirky and beautiful style to PCT. Novik''s Balkan/Gypsy influences and sense of experimentation give the band undeniable depth. As leader of his own group, Gubbish, Novik possesses compositional and leadership skills that enrich PCT''s horn section.
David Arend, upright bass, is the latest member to join PCT. Coming from a strong classical background at Oberlin and Julliard, Arend brings grace and musicianship to anchor the group. His collaborations with Ornette Coleman, Richard Davis, George Crumb, and founding of the non-profit chamber group, ensembleMARS, have paved the way for his importance in S.F.''s creative music scene.
Since its'' inception, Patrick Cress'' Telepathy has performed throughout California. The group has played for diverse audiences from San Francisco''s Storyville and Jon Sims center, to Oakland''s Black Box and Jazz House, to L.A.''s the Mint, Santa Monica''s Temple bar, and San Diego''s Dizzy''s. PCT has also built an audience from scratch with a bi-weekly gig at the London Wine Bar since April 2002. The band plans a series of tours in Southern California this summer and the Northwest this fall promoting their second album, ...liberate the radio stations...
