The Let Up was born in Spokane, WA in the fall of 2006; after Cory Howard turned down a music scholarship at University of Idaho to pursue the success of The Let Up with Scottie Feider. The band has stated major influences of The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Supertramp along with an eclectic mix of underlying classics such as Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, and Judy Garland. Recently stated, Cory Howard reflects, "our biggest influences these days are our peers - the bands that we''ve performed with or admire in the indie scene". These include The Spill Canvas, Say Anything, The Higher, Lydia, Danger Radio, and The Matches among others.
Defying genre The Let Up feels their music is self-proclaimed indie groove rock, combining the best of rock, soul, and jazz into a completely unique and independent sound. Their debut album, Illustrate My Character, is truly a combination of all these sounds. Released in March 2008, this soulful groove of indie rock is a stellar example of a band without classification, going through a rollercoaster ride of soul, rock, R&B, and dance rock. The Let Up is a true example of the diversity of what is now called indie rock; this band is a reflection of what independent music is really about - originality and self-expression. In the process of music video production for the single "Miss Vanity" along with a fourth tour of the West Coast in 2008, the band that started as a small dent in the Northwest music scene is quickly becoming a break through act all over the country.
