Details:
In late 2006, in a parking lot nestled between Downtown Nashville and the airport (BNA), two recently imported singer songwriters, Andy Gasparini and Stephen Berger, started a friendship, and subsequently a band, through a conversation that sprawled from the whereabouts of a missing cat to the emergence of black metal in mid-1980’s Scandinavia. The dynamic between these two students of popular (and unpopular) music proved to be more complex than the first sentence of this bio. It is only through sheer will that two people can discuss the nuances of songwriting and showmanship whilst shouting over airplanes trying to land. This set the tone for LowHigh.

Stephen Berger (pronounced with a soft “g”) crawled out of the swamps of southeast Louisiana into the NOLA hardcore scene, and eventually found a home in the dissonant indie-rock underground. After a few assorted sonically experimental noise projects, Stephen sang and played guitar in the band Klonipin in the late 90’s, and went on to front The Numbers and The Surf Thugs in the coming years. Leaving New Orleans in the middle of the night, Stephen took an 18 month sabbatical from music, reinventing himself and getting married in the Smoky Mountains. Rejuvenated, he and his new wife, a native Nashvillian, relocated to Tennessee with the hopes of finding similarly afflicted artistic people.

Andy Gasparini (pronounced with a hard “g”) grew up in the Bloomington, IN music scene, first playing drums in the hardcore band Hot Rod Girl before founding Swimming with Sharks, a decadent display of performance art coupled with hard rock, as a guitar player in 2001. During his 5 years in Bloomington, he attended Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music where he studied audio production and technology, and supported The General, coach Bobby Knight. After a year of guitar-slinging for The Nicotones, Andy went on to front the dark pop/rock band Car Parked Sideways, which remained a vehicle for his songwriting over the next 3 years. In 2005, Andy decided a move was necessary in order to further his study in music production. Given the choice of the big three recording cities, Andy chose Nashville over NYC and LA, mostly because cigarettes were cheaper there.

LowHigh was sprung forth from the idea that the song is the true frontman in a band, and all decisions, both creative and technical, are made to support the intensity and the mood of the lyrics. Drawing from a vast array of influences that range from Steve Earle to Queen, from Iron Maiden to Tom Waits, from Teddy Pendergrass to Jim Mora, and from Kelly Clarkson to Elvis Costello, LowHigh seek to develop a unique sound, where the music itself acts as vehicle for the stories and emotions that are contained within the songs, and to deliver a message: That it’s okay for punk kids to like Bruce Springsteen and not feel ashamed.
