Futurus is the result of the creative musical collaboration of electronic musicians and composers Dave Luxton and Aaron Gates. Recorded in 2008, the majority of the compositions were composed live in the studio with Luxton and Gates performing on keyboard synthesizers simultaneously. In keeping with this improvisational approach, most of the pieces were recorded without sequenced parts, set tempo or other artificial impositions. A collection of seven full-length tracks emerged, capturing the liberating approach used in the conceptualization and recording of the album. Each artist also contributed solo compositions to the album, the last three album tracks by Dave and one by Aaron in the form of a hidden track that appears at the end of the album.
Futurus began as a concept album with the goal of creating musical representations of prominent themes that the future might hold for life on this planet. The end result is an album that features ten (plus the hidden track) creative instrumental compositions that take the listener on a sonic adventure into the future. The album is both technological and organic in feel, and fosters visual representations in the listener’s mind as well as an emotional experience.
