It''s hard enough for a band to survive high school. It''s even harder for a band to survive when two of the members are brothers. It''s almost impossible for a band to survive a car crash on Hwy 72 coming home from playing a gig in Virginia that sends the vehicle and trailer sliding approximately 50 feet sideways, narrowly missing a guardrail, and flipping over 2-3 (miraculously with the trailer still attached).
But that''s exactly what happened to Muscle Shoals natives Firewood. Since forming the band in junior high, and again reforming it in 2003, Whitney Dean (guitar, vocals) and Brint Roden (bass) have had more than their share of bumps in the road.
After the usual "trail and error" of high school rock bands, and the loss of their original drummer after high school, Whitney moved off to college at UNA in Florence where he met Justin Oliver (drums). After adding Whitney''s brother, Bradley Dean (keys), Firewood finally found the lineup that would solidify them as a musical presence on the Shoals rock scene.
"Now we are one big happy band family, and [we''re] constantly growing musically," says Whitney.
With a true mesh of radio-friendly rock mixed with indie rock, Whitney says that Firewood is "doing what feels natural". When asked if Firewood considers themselves among the "new image" of Muscle Shoals, Whitney is still humble in his response.
"We would feel flattered to be considered as part of the "new image", and do feel as if we are. We''ve been in the Shoals area playing venues and for UNA for the past couple years. So, we would hope that people in the area would consider us as a part at least, and being part of the history would be amazing."
Humble as they may be, Firewood has had quite a measure of success to date.
Included in their resume are accomplishments such as: being named WLAY 92.3FM''s Muscle Shoals Music Awards Alternative band of the year 2008, Opening for Sister Hazel at Big Spring Jam back in 2005; playing City Stages next to The Killers; opening for acts such as Angie Aparo, Needtobreathe, and Collective Soul, just to name a few. Not to mention that they are receiving radio airtime on local stations Star 94.9FM and 92.3 FM.
