Flagstaff, Arizona provided the ethereal inspiration for the pre-grunge phenomenon known as The Peaceful Tadpoles. The stories get stranger with time and yet most are based on fact. Yes, drummer Billy Bash Harper played their first several concerts with a trap set made up largely of Tupperware and cookie pans. Yes, bassist Adam Holmes really is a COLONEL (congrats, Adam!) in the United States Marine Corps. Dreamy lead singer Martin Lang can croon the pants of any (any) schoolgirl and guitarist James Ward Byrkit did lose a good portion of his hair when a crazed fan stormed the stage with scissors.
The most famous Tadpole, of course, is still Curtis Dawn, the raging manic-depressive semi-albino backup singer, who has gone on to quite a career as a session singer in the best studios in the world. Lang and Dawn still sing together but refuse to speak.
The singing. The Peaceful Tadpoles sing in that way you wish guys in college would sing when you see them pull out guitars. You wish the voices were great, you wish they actually spent five minutes deciding who sings what harmony. With the Tadpoles, you can tell they spent ten, even fifteen minutes practicing harmonies. They''re that good.
It was the late eighties. Before MTV Unplugged, before the stripped down grunge movement, there were the Tadpoles, singing and playing songs everyone at the party could sing with. No big hair. No wailing guitar solos. No shrieking concert rock falsettos. They just started making music and it was a blast.
They should have toured with the Byrds in the 60''s but they weren''t born yet. They each dated a member of Wilson Phillips. One of their songs has eight chords.
"We Wish We Were You" is regrettably the only album available right now but it does feature 3 bonus tracks from 1994 that show remarkable development from their college days. It''s still the happiest album I own and the best way to remember the days right after the eighties and right before Nirvana came and ruined everything. Thank you, Peaceful Tadpoles. Thank you.
