Details:
Eccentric. It’s become the default descriptive of frustrated critics who can’t come up with just the right word to describe a new artist they’re hearing for the first time. Susan Morris would welcome it because she knows it not only describes her music but also the path that led her to what she has felt driven to do since she was a child growing up right outside of Nashville, Tennessee.
Eccentric is not the over used “My first memories of singing in front of a crowd are at church when I was 5 years old…”. It more accurately describes a family’s memories of a young child singing obnoxiously loud in the backseat with whatever was playing on the radio, and making up her own songs when the radio was off. Early stage appearance stories are a dime a dozen, but how many songwriters still have the first song they wrote when they were only 7, and can say the song was written about painful emotions surrounding human tragedy instead of blue skies and rainbows?
Resisting but not dismissing the country heritage of her hometown, Susan remained open to influences across the board, thanks in part to her audiophile closet DJ father who exposed her to everything from classic rock to modern day top 40, with a mother who exposed her to country and broadway musicals by the first viewing of Grease. A stint at Nashville’s School of the Arts kept her performing and singing into high school, but it wasn’t until her senior year that she realized how big a part songwriting would play in her life. “I knew early on that I wanted to be a singer” Susan remembers, “but the songwriting is just a part of me, it’s not something I set out to do as a career, it’s who I am, and I could no more deny myself that than I could choose to stop breathing..
The little girl with the big voice and the serious songs is now Susan Morris, a woman with a powerful, affecting vocal talent and a gift for writing about love, life, and standing up for what you believe. Her raw honesty is delivered in songs like “Better”, where she muses that sometimes it’s not really better to have loved and lost, or the courageously introspective “Wake Up”. She leaves no doubt that she knows what she wants with “Be A Man”, and then crawls inside your heart like she’s been there in “Truth Hurts”.
Listening to Susan you will be challenged to give one name to her style, and her debut album, Bitter Sweet, will have you wondering if she is a bigger fan of Avril Lavigne, Natalie Imbruglia, Kelly Clarkson, or even Linkin Park. Just enjoy the music and realize this is different, and different is a good thing in music. And when you are asked to describe it for someone, she’d be proud if you’re tempted to use that word… ”eccentric”.
