Following the release of his first project, “Viceroy- The Clearcut “ in the fall of 2008, Ken McAllister continued to experiment with different tunings, and musical structures, he moved a large piano into his studio, and continued to ground himself in his writing and singing, things he felt he lacked in his first production. He later said that he felt that Western pop music, had a ” void in harmonium”. His explorations led him back to research that guided him through his twenty years of education. The road lead him to examine more worldly music, more specifically focusing his attention on the music of India. “It was like opening up a good new book, you just don’t know how it going to end, you just want to be along for the ride”, He later said.
Using these diverse peculiar musical colors and the tools at his disposal, Ken constructed a balanced musical mosaic on a seemingly dark-yet love -infused audio canvas. He finds beauty from the bleak, by blending poetic folk Americana, with the peaceful droned Carnatic harmony of the East. They meet like an amalgamation of the Himalayan and Cascade Mountains, colliding to make one big mountain of sound. Like giant trees growing from a wilderness that was clearcut and made into a desolate industrial wasteland, that is the essence of The Degrees EP, it is a death and rebirth of its own. You can feel that emotion in the final track, a piano solo entitled “Contrivance the Tragic Poet...Okay in the Present”, which is loosely based on a character from Plato’s Symposium. It is a dramatic, yet fitting end to the almost 13 minute roller coaster ride that is The Degrees EP.
