the one that came from way in the back, and turned every head. It is a voice that draws on the sacred as well as the profane. It is a broken sob that does not want for mending . It is a voice that does not apologize for this. It is the kind of voice that whispers secrets, soothes children, disturbs the air, drowses chaperones and gooses ganders. It is the kind of voice that you’d believe even if you knew that it was lying. It is a voice that cannot tell a lie. There are times that Penwell reaches down and pulls it from a place so deeply sensual – so private -- a gentleman might feel obliged to avert his stare, and turn away. BIOGRAPHY
Amie Penwell’s songs remind us of where we are perfect, and tell us the truth about where we are not. She accomplishes this with songs of great beauty, emotional intelligence, earthiness and humanity. She is the classic canary in a coal mine, in that she raises the common alarm, even as she soothes. Always, always drawing upon one, single-minded, fierce commitment: To send out the alarm only if the bell rings true. Born in Massachusetts, Penwell migrated to San Francisco, where she honed and crafted her singular style. In 2004 Jai Uttal introduced Amie to Grammy-nominated producer Ben Leinbach together they recorded her SOLD OUT self titled EP Amie Penwell. It is available for digital download at CDBABY and ITUNES.
You can hear her song "Mercy" on DVA Production''s documentary: "The Eye''s of Thailand" due out in 2009.
Penwell''s first full length recording "King In A Temple" comes out of her time spent with Master Artist JB Blunk, as his caregiver for the last 6 months of the artist''s life in 2002. It is already getting the attention of David Byrne for her stunning cover of Talking Heads "Naive Melody". Indie Pioneer Derek Sivers, and Music Industry Guru Eugene Foley, (referred to by many as "Dr. Gene") hand picked Penwell out of 500 artists to give an 8 week coaching session (on Derek''s dime) to help launch the record.
Amie is currently filming a video with for the records first track "Show Me To The River" with Director Alexander Kieselstein, which will also be featured in February''s "Taste Of Triple A". A highly regarded sampler put together by Jim Nelson.
Says Penwell: "Music seems to be one of the few acceptable ways of speaking the truth. It guides, liberates, connects, and transforms. At least it continues to transform me- as long as I have the good sense to get out of the way."
