New York City''s PRANKSTAR combines ingredients of funk, pop, electric blues, reggae and rock, marrying the pulse of the urban Northeast with the grit of southern honky-tonks to create a unique and infectious sound. The music has been described by the Village Voice as "a toughened-up Dave Matthews Band", but whatever the comparison, the music is invariably described as funky modern rock with an R & B edge.
PRANKSTAR was formed in the early years of the 21st century, and is an unlikely marriage of the disparate talents of the band members. The "Oklahoma Electric" - guitarists Jason Presley and Adam Headrick - got their start on the BBQ circuit in their native Oklahoma, where they acquired a popular following with their band Certified Fools while at Oklahoma State University. Dave French honed his drumming skills playing with numerous bands from the Philadelphia area before hooking up with Adam and Jason in New York. With the addition of Mick Tuminello, a longtime singer/songwriter and guitarist who auditioned on a lark for a bass slot in the band, an immediate bond was formed and PRANKSTAR was born.
While climbing the ladder of New York clubs, PRANKSTAR recorded their debut album, ONE, which showcases the band''s accomplished musicianship against, as one reviewer put it, a "vocal vibe that''s as cool as menthol smoke." https://www.tradebit.com says "it''s the soft murmur against a tide of funky instrumentals that makes One stand out, recalling...eerie sexuality"
With the completion of the album, PRANKSTAR faced a new challenge - the departure of half of the band''s blistering guitar team to active duty in the armed forces. Fortunately, during Captain Headrick''s (yes, that''s Captain) Iraqi sabbatical, the band has been fortunate to add keyboardist Danger McCann, a talented multi-instrumentalist.
Look for ONE to make its mark, as the band forges onward.
