Progressive art rock with classic influence
10 MP3 Songs
ROCK: Progressive Rock, ROCK: Psychedelic
Details:
For once, there''s an album title that directly reflects the contents of thealbum. The Different Shades of Waves compliments Precursor''s neo-indie/psychedelic/metal infusion. Every song on the album showcases either a different element or a different configuration of those elements, bringing to the album a strange quality of a mix tape where all the songs are played by a weird alchemistic cover band. Yet, it works and it works well.
Tsunami is a perfect example of this, with a repeating Rage Against the Machine influenced lead guitar intro that heads into and indie-pop verse and culminates in an early 90''s grungy chorus. And then set the instruments on repeat boys. Then the next song, Sea Salt and Vinegar, begins with a bluesy country guitar riff that sounds like Heart from Doug Martsch''s last solo album before breaking away into some weird mixture of a television rhythm guitar and a simple melodic lead guitar. The entire album is the mish mash of seemingly unrelated influences and Precursor
makes it all work. So if you like not knowing where an album is going to go, look for The Different Shades of Waves, because Precursor tries to show the entire spectrum of rock ''n'' roll - a tough task - yet they seem to be pretty
capable of coming damn close to doing it.
