The story is set in a non-descript midievel time for no real particular reason, other than just to simplify the storytelling.
Ilrod is a young man who is “coming of age” and is instructed to go out and make his way in the world. As he leaves the friendly confines of his village in search of “Glory, God and Gold”.
He eventually comes upon a nobleman who has broken down on the road. Ilrod helps right the nobleman’s carriage and inadvertantly helps ease a problem between the man and his daughter.
Through this series of events Ilrod accompanies the nobleman and becomes a sort of right-hand man. A facilitator.
Over a period of years Ilrod comes to realize that he is only helping in the corrupt power of the nobleman. Even though he has found a good measure of glory and gold, it has left him unfulfilled and disillusioned.
He swears off this lifestyle and leaves as he had left his village years before. Distraught, he wonders into a church to say a prayer for guidance.
Eventually Ilrod sees the clergy’s error, essentially putting itself above the God and ways that they profess to follow.
He walks away from all this, dejected, disillusioned by the way he has lived his life. Was it all for nothing. He eventually comes upon the river and man he had seen long ago. He sits to rest there and realizes that he at last feels at peace.
