Devon’s produced some pretty major acts in recent years – Joss Stone, Coldplay, Seth Lakeman, and of course Muse. Now, fronted by charismatic singer/songwriter Dan Steer, a new band has emerged from this fertile artistic land, namely The Quails. The Quails have been honing their talents for a couple of years and are now ready to take things to a higher level with the release of their superb album “I’ve Heard it’s all Rumours”. Killers meet Kasabian, Kooks meet Kaiser Chiefs (how many more bands can we think of beginning with K?). But the Quails have their own unique sound. A superb live band, they are now drawing crowds of thousands in their native South Devon. They have played at some prestigious venues such as The Louisiana in Bristol, The Koola Bar Red Stripe Music Competition, Walkabout Newquay, The Half Moon in Putney, The Carling Academy and The World’s End, Camden, the Plymouth and Paignton Volksfest and will be shortly supporting The Alabama 3 and Vice Squad. They won the final of The Battle of The Band’s Competition at The Hub in Plymouth. Jack Wills clothing are endorsing the band and have had them play at several major gigs including one at The Royal Polo Ground in Windsor and St George’s University, London.
Reviewer Colin Parrish wrote of one of their London gigs: “It''s not often that the bar staff at a great music venue like the Half Moon rave about a new band – come on, they''ve seen it all before. But that''s exactly what happened last night when The Quails hit London like a category five hurricane.
The five-piece, from the sleepy Devon seaside town of Teignmouth, blasted through a fantastic set of danceable, quirky indie pop songs that left the audience breathless and begging for more. Front-man singer/guitarist Dan Steer may look like a badly drawn boy but he sounds like the finished article and guitarist Max Armstrong stunned the crowd with some amazing chunky riffs, while every hit-you-where-it-matters song was underpinned by the tightest rhythm section outside an atomic clock, courtesy of bassist Sam Banks, drummer Chris Prentice and rhythm guitarist John foulkes. Talk about a Wall of Sound! Phil Spector, eat your heart out, because these boys sounded like Heathrow the night before a bank holiday.
Teignmouth already has one band that are doing reasonably well for themselves - I think they''re called Muse. But here''s a tip for you: The Quails are coming, and if anybody asks you how you know, tell them a little bird told you.”
