Talk Down the Sky is a wonderful example of all that is right with rock and roll. Take a band that was formed in the back of an autobdy shop over a case of Pabst, start the next day by recording whatever they write and have a finished record in 7 days. Not just any record, but one that Pundits have called a "barroom masterpiece", and a "blue-collar magnificence". We''ll give you more great quotes about the CD later.
Seven songs were all that was recorded in this beer-and-cigarettes fueled week-long session. Each song made it to the CD. The title track and "Time To Ramble" showcase the band''s quieter side. "Second Hand Man" has been described as "a perfect drinking ballad, complete with self-loathing lyrics and a plodding rhythm section to which you can nod your inebriated head". The rest of the songs come at you like an unfettered juggernaut including the infectious rocker that is "Plan B", the shout-along of "See Ya Later" and the freewheeling "Standin''".
So who created this beast? Head Rambler Dan McCoy is at the driver seat as vocalist and guitarist. His voice gets comparisons to Chris Robinson of Black Crowes fame, and his guitar work is similar to the other Robinson in the Crowes. Throw in some Bob Seeger, Dylan, Springsteen, Wilco, and Ryan Adams influences and you get the idea. Then there is Cooter Duke on bass and vocals and his brother Jesse on drums. The brothers are as tight musically as brothers can be and as deft at various styles as true musicians.
The CD was recorded in the basement of a Duke cousin. The story goes that the band tried to pay for the recording time in Camel Cash. Instead of taking the Camel Cash, the recording engineer decided to become the band manager.
The band is based outside of Cleveland, Ohio and performs constantly. Fortunately, they can fix their own van. The band has generated a huge reputation as a hard drinking trio that never fails to entertain. Live radio recordings are being passed around like bootlegs and current samples of their next CD are already being pirated among some truly dedicated local fans. Recently added to bills including Sonic Youth, Wilco, and Slobberbone, the band is building momentum outside of their little Lake County neighborhood.
