WORLD: Reggae, JAZZ: Smooth Jazz

Details:
This is the kind of jazz/reggae that sounds great powering out of your hi-fi on a Summer Sunday afternoon. Chilled and beautifully played, ''Leisure Island Rub'' is a cool slice of Caribbean sunshine which would sound as good spilling out onto the steamy streets of London as it would drifting across a palm-fringed beach from the local beach café. The reggae edge to the music has more presence than you''ll find in the average jazz/reggae release and there''s a powerful dancehall element carrying most tunes, lifting them to a dance pace should the listener feel so inspired.
Ray Carless is one of the finest saxophone players on the contemporary UK scene, his style is very lyrical and his phrasing always on the one. Ray has followed in his father George''s footsteps and become a much sought-after session player (dad played with the legendary Fela Kuti amongst others), we could list a few of those he''s played with but the review might get a bit overlong...Ray is currently touring Europe with ''SKA CUBANO'', a Cuban Jamaican mix of Latin and Ska. This hot new blend that''s cutting through the festival scene, try not to miss them.(https://www.tradebit.com)
Anthony Jones is a Guyana-born multi-instrumentalist, one of those guys who can turn his hand to just about any instrument and make it sound like it''s what he''s best at. Here he plays drums, percussion, keyboards, guitar, he even takes lead vocal on ''Mr Melody'', ''Daydreaming'', ''No hard food'', ''In the Caribbean'' & ''Cool, cool life''.
The album mixes vocal and instrumental tracks and features vocalists Dennis Alcapone (a hilarious update on the ''Elizabethan Reggae'' theme), future star Delroy Pinnock, whose performance on the title track shows much promise, and backing vocals from Angela Scott-Walker. So sit back, get the shades on and, whether you''re baking in Brixton or chilling in Kingston, enjoy the grooves from one of the finest pairings on the contemporary dance scene.

This is a new collaboration between two excellent Caribbean musicians, (Ray Carless & Anthony Jones who have contributed their first names to create ''Ray Anthony'', a new musical partnership intent on making good music to bring enthusiastic lovers of good wholesome music back to the fold. Their unique blend of jazz and reggae neatly bridges whatever gap remains between soul, jazz and dancehall in so relaxing a manner that it becomes chilled dance music that makes very interesting listening.

Ray Carless is a well known saxophonist who gained national success way back in the eighties with his debut solo single Tarantula Walk. This was in the early days of Jazz Funk when London first went funky with the first wave of black UK musicians hell bent on giving their American counterparts (EWF, Kool & The Gang, etc) a run for their money. Band like Light Of The World, Hi Tension, Linx, Loose Ends and Central Line were good pickings for the man with a soulful and funky sax for hire. Ray Carless was involved with all of these bands at some point or the other and he went on to play important roles as an original founder member/contributor of other ground breaking British bands like Incognito and the Jazz Warriors.
Ray who arrived in the UK in the sixties inherited his musicality from his father, George Carless who a played Tenor Sax but was a Tailor by trade was introduced to music by the legendary trumpeter Eddie (Tan Tan) Thornton while at home in Spanish Town Jamaica. George migrated to the UK where he found regular employment in the factories while operating semi - professionally an the club scene. The highlights of his music experience here are undoubtedly with the young outspoken developing Nigerian musician Fela Kuti plus the fledgling Jamaican singer Millicent Small who went on to top the Charts with My Boy Lollipop.

Both well known artists in their own rights within the music industry, the musical partnership between Jamaican horns man Ray Carless and Guyanese Drummer/Producer Anthony Jones has resulted in an interesting collaboration.
Be it via jazz or reggae, their CD, Leisure Island Rub simply delivers a generous portion of sensuous music.

All tracks are produced by Ray Carless and Anthony Jones on this, their first project together. They dip deep down into a rich vein of wickedly sweet musical treasures, overflowing with references to their diverse experiences here in the UK. Just kick back and imagine the earthy roots feel of Jamaican saxophonist Dean Fraser and the Bob Marley Ryddim section, coupled with a dash of Kenny G''s sweet syrupy tone.

Ray and Anthony have both performed and recorded with a galaxy of stars during their many exciting musical excursions, including Monty Alexander, Elvin Jones, Hugh Masakela, Sly & Robbie, Bob Andy, Dennis Alcapone, Billy Ocean, Gabrielle, Eternal, Incognito, Jules Holland, Courtney Pine, Will Downing, Sharon Forrester, Ruby Turner, Janet Kay, Carol Thompson, Azwad, Maxi Priest, Luciano, and the BBC award winning Jazz Jamaica All Stars.

Be prepared to see and hear Ray & Anthonys'' cool relaxing ''Ryddim & Jazz'' selection accessing Reggae, Jazz & World Music categories. This album is direct chill out music composed for the purposes of healing and soothing your daily stresses. Its mellow and laid back just like Rays'' previous ''96 offering on the Triple Earth Label entitled ''Body Moves''. Ray Carless'' Soprano, Tenor and Baritone saxophones have graced many albums, recording and television studios and stages over the past 30 years and his performance on this Caribbean jazz jaunt is tantalisingly rootsy, soulful, skilful and graciously entertaining. The production and arrangements courtesy of his partner Anthony are exquisitely rich, compact and to the point.

This 17 track selection showcases the smoky vocals of British based Lovers singer Delroy Pinnock on the title track ''Leisure Island'' as well as Dennis (yea yea yea) Alcapone, one of the original Studio One ''Toasters''. Other tracks include a tongue in cheek vocal version of 70''s instrumental ''Elizabethan Reggae'' performed by Dennis Alcapone on vocals and featuring ex UB40 trombonist ''Buttons''. On this version Dennis asks ''Why yu doant want Charles fo'' King?'', prophesying that "Charles needs a woman and Camilla wants a man". This particular track may not go down too good with supporters of the Royal family but deserve inclusion for its naughty mickey taking humour. Original compositions comprise the bulk of this CD and tracks to look out for include Mister Melody, Sunset Blues, Midnight Hurricane and Dancing In Paradise while the songs that you may recognise will include Shanices'' I Like Your Smile and Whitneys'' I will always love you (courtesy of Dolly Parton).

Ray, has just completed a national UK tour with Hugh Masakela and The Jazz Jamaica All stars celebrating 10 years of freedom for South Africa and he is scheduled to perform at the Black Music History Day Awards show at The Ocean Music Venue in Hackney on 17th October. He is scheduled to be the recipient of an award for services and contributions to the Black Music Industry. Other artists on the bill include, Musical Youth, Five Star, Dennis Alcapone, Don Ricardo, Donna Marie, Kofi and the Blackstones.
