When long time biker Richard Allen Rankin straddles his ''78 Shovelhead and dips through the hollows outside Nashville, TN, he makes music. I don''t mean the deep-throated tones of a hog skimming concrete, but the kind of music you may have heard in your soul when rounding a curve banked with honeysuckle or chancing upon a blazing red sunset or pursuing an almost-lost love.
The real treasure is the original music he writes. There''s no disco Crisco, no pap they call " Rap" and no damn beach bar music - no way! Instead, a dozen acoustic solos fill his premier album, "Restless Rider." A healthy Nashville following, and new fans at Daytona and Sturgis appearances, led to the release of the album on CD.
Rankin said at press time, "It''s laid back listening, mostly, but in varied styles, with instrumental backup. I always enjoy it when I walk into a place and hear my songs on the jukebox. Good to know folks connect with my feelings."
The 12 prime cuts on "Restless Rider" range from a soft-sung ballad entitled "Scooter People," to a kind of honkey-tonkey New Orleans blues style, "I''ve Got A Woman." In between, "Ain''t Got Time," "One More Desperado," " The Old Man And The Ride," and others stir up memories, goose bumps and grins - or at the very least, a revived appreciation of what it is to ride free.
Indeed, one memorable refrain is from the album''s headline song, "Restless Rider." It goes: Ride on restless riders; the highway''s like a long lost friend; put it in the wind again; sometimes you''ve got to steal away, live for today..."
