My name is Yitka Karlikova. I was born in former Czechoslovakia now Czech Republic. Since I was a little girl I have always had a passion for music. All my childhood I have been singing in choirs and competing in talent shows. When I was thirteen and my country was still under communism, my older brother inspired me as I watched him play the guitar and listen to all the classic bands like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Queen and Bob Dylan. At this time he brought me home my first six string guitar. He showed me my first three basic guitar chords and I went from there. This took my heart and soul and I practiced for hours daily. When I was sixteen I was in my first band called Horoscope, where I sang and played the guitar. At the age of eighteen I moved to Prague and joined my first professional band Accord. My life then went on and I had two children and immigrated to Canada in 1991. When I arrived I taught myself English. I went through some very difficult times but music always seemed to get me through the worst of them. I was inspired by personal experiences and other people around me to write songs. I started to play live music with other musicians, and I finally got the strength and courage to record my first CD titled, “Contradiction”. It features 12 of my original songs produced and engineered by Danny Z. at his Blue Tilt Studio here in Hamilton, Ont. Since the release of my CD, I have played the local festivals (Friendship Festival, Cornfest, Caribbean at Bayfront Park, and the Cactus Festival in Dundas, Ont.) I held my public CD release party with much success at The Casbah Lounge on November 3rd, 2007. The event was covered by our local Cable 14 and Czech Television in Toronto, and I was recently nominated for a Hamilton Music Award in the Folk/Roots category.
