The Story Behind Miss Gail and the Jumpin’ Jam CD
I always open my shows by telling the audience that “I’m a celebrity….as long as you’re under 6 years old.” Ages 0 to 6 or so is my ‘thing’….. Having taught the internationally acclaimed Music Together® program for ten years in the Atlanta area, I’ve gotten to know what ‘works’ with little kids and how to relate to them musically. I also have learned what ‘works’ for parents and how to help them nurture their little “musicians”. “Just act musically,” I always say, “and the rest will follow. Your child doesn’t care if you can sing.” So based on this, I became known as “Miss Gail” and the rest is history….now grown adults chase me down and yell, “MISS GAIL, MISS GAIL!” in the grocery store so their child can say hi! It would be nice to have a ‘cooler’ name….but this is how I’m known to my biggest fans!
I branched out into children’s entertainment……from performing at birthday parties, MOMs clubs, festivals, schools, as a feature concert artist at some large children''s retail chains, and now, with my own band,Miss Gail and the Jumpin’ Jam Band. Our debut CD was released June 21, 2008 to a crowd of nearly 500 wiggling, singing, dancing, moving kids and adults. The CD features many ‘kid friendly’ genres..… keeping in mind that the parents have to listen to it too… (sometimes over and over and over!)
My opinion is that there are many worn out, BAD versions of traditional songs out there. But kids and parents still always seem to ‘perk up’ when I perform some of the traditional numbers. So, the CD is a mix of original tunes and very cool, edgy, fun and unique versions of some of the ‘favorites’
Our originals are getting great kids and parent reviews….Funky Finger Jam, (co-written by Gold Record songwriter and INO recording artist, Laura Story), is our JAZZ version of the traditional ‘ten little fingers’ fingerplay. Why? When? Who? What? takes us on a rap ‘whirl’ of all those questions kids ask, and Jumpin Jam’ rocks out and really gets the kids moving. If You Like To gets even the youngest children listening, tapping, patting, and wiggling. The Greasy Burger and Spinach Song medley was co-written and sung by my own kids. It’s an imaginative ‘vignette’ of all the greasy gross stuff kids eat contrasted with all the healthy stuff we want them to eat. ….
We have an amazingly beautiful version of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, featuring ME on vocals and CELLO (my ‘major’ instrument!), a kicked-up country version of Down By The Bay, and a “nearly-electronica” version of If You’re Happy and You Know It.
The final song, a version of Irving Berlin’s Always, is dedicated to Moms of kids on the autism spectrum (I, myself, being one of them) for our conviction to fight for, sacrifice for, and love our kids…”ALWAYS”. A portion of my CD will be donated to AUTISM RESEARCH.
