Born in Providence, Rhode Island, Don was six when he took his first piano lesson; at age seven he attended the celebrated Eugene O''Neill Theatre Center in Waterford, Connecticut, and at fourteen he was cast in a school production of Mame, there began his love of theatre, music and the performing arts. He began his formal voice training at the age of sixteen. By the time he was in college he was studying both popular vocal styles as well as opera. He performed regularly in musicals and operas throughout southern New England.

While obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in history and political science at the University of Rhode Island, Don continued his vocal studies and performed in various school shows and operas. He made his professional stage debut at age 18 in a production of Gilbert and Sullivan''s Patience with Ocean State Lyric Opera (OSLO). Over the next six years he took leading roles in a variety of musicals, his favorites including South Pacific, Closer than Ever, Baby, The Secret Garden, Westside Story, and operas and operettas such as Gianni Schicci, Trial by Jury, and Carmen. Don originated the role of Michael in the opera Jacob''s Grace with OSLO.
