The illegitimate son of a Tel Aviv commando and a Brooklyn kibbutznik,
Bris was conceived behind a camel shed in the Negev. His early years were
spent shuttling between Borough Park and K’far Blum. Mitzy Goldfarb, Bris’ 2nd grade Hebrew School teacher at Rodeph Shalom, recounts vivid memories of the freckled boy with a head of orange curls: “I’d be in the middle of a lektsy, and that shumtsik would have his hands all over the meydeles.”
Thrown out of Tranquility Bay, the notorious Jamaican reform school, Bris spent his teenage years busking in Jerusalem. It was during this
fertile period that he forged his mesmerizing performing style. Forced to
compete with a cacophony of screaming Russian cabbies, ululating Ethiopians, and shattering glass, Bris rose above the fray to mesmerize crowds of Birthright tourists. The wide-eyed, fresh-faced American kids returned home to Paramus kvellin’. From Brandeis to UPenn, word spread of the six-string slinging troubador. For surburbanites weaned on the flaccid sounds of DMB and OAR, the electrifying mélange that Bris was laying down in the streets of Meah Shearim were nothing short of oysergeveynlekh.
No one knew where or when Bris would appear. But on those now legendary Sabbath nights, the sounds of rockabilly, ska, country and klezmer echoing off the ancient, stone walls, were nothing short of transcendent.
And then Bris disappeared. Needless to say, the international blogging community twittered incessantly. One rumor claimed that Bris was studying at Pardes, while others believed that he had taken a job as a sous chef at Momofuku. Many people reported sightings: Bris in full lotus at a monastery in the Himalayas; Bris throwing strikes at a duck pin bowling alley in Jamaica Plain; Bris training K-9 shepherds in Dusseldorf.
Then, just before Chanukah in 5769, a babbling brook of gossip turned into a Masadan roar, as fan sites began announcing the release of the debut CD by Bris. “Cut and Run”will drop on the 25th of Kislev, along with a new website (https://www.tradebit.com) and video (for “JDate”). A world tour is in the works, along with a line of handbags designed by Bris for the “working woman on a budget.” Only Hashem knows what we can expect from this reclusive master of sonic style and dope rhymes.
For now, let us give a hearty yasher koyekh to Bris.
