Music has always been, and will always be, according to Jeni, “the chocolate chips in the cookie that is my life! There’s no part of my life that lacks music, which is just how I like it.” Country radio kept Jeni’s family moving around the Midwest when she was a child. And her love of music keeps her working in music today, both as a singer/songwriter and as the Station Manager and morning show co-host of a progressive triple a radio station in Northeast Iowa. “Dad worked in small market country radio, and I was definitely influenced by the sounds coming from the radio. Music was a part of our eating, sleeping and breathing. Before I was even 12, I’d met Barbara Mandrell, Willie Nelson, The Judds, Crystal Gayle (I sat on her hair! oops.) and so many more all backstage at concerts. Country radio back then was much like the indie scene is today: real, accessible and exciting.”

But country music wasn’t the only style Jeni heard as a child. “Oh, definitely not! Dad and Mom had a large album collection that include Bob Marley and the Wailers, Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, Prince and musicals, like Chess. I’m telling you, there’s nothing better than cleaning on a Saturday morning listening to Purple Rain and Van’s album, Beautiful Vision. Come on, “Cleaning Windows” while you are cleaning windows?! Nice.”

Scenic Route is Jeni’s debut EP and was recorded in one 6 hour, late night recording session with two talented friends, Aimee Ringle and Nori Hadley. “I wanted to keep it very true to the songs and to who I am. It’s acoustic...very raw, and real. You won’t hear a glossy over-produced sound. You’ll hear Jeni Grouws, just as you would if we were sitting together in my living room. Just be careful while you’re in my living room......it’s a minefield of children’s books, science kits, toys and dress up clothes!”

Jeni Grouws currently resides in Decorah, Iowa, with her Music Director husband, David Grouws, and her three daughters, Lillian, Sofie and Ella.
