Jen’s musical career began in the early 90s in NYC’s East Village, singing weekly at the venerated Café Sin-e with an “urban folk” band. In this vibrant music scene Jen honed her skills (“rich, full-bodied” vocals, SoundViews) (“polyrhythmic singing,” Downtown Express), sharing the stage with Sinead O’Connor, Susan McKeown, a young Ani DiFranco, and many others. When the band (and a longtime relationship) split up, Jen moved west to San Francisco and became a homebirth midwife, delivering babies in three counties. A few years later she became a mother herself. Jen took a break from midwifery and returned to music, this time writing her own material and playing guitar. In some ways, the two labors of love are rather similar: being a midwife and being a singer/songwriter require making full use of heart, hands and mind. “Lonesome Sunbeam,” Jen’s debut CD, is the result of several years of songwriting and nearly three years of work in the studio. Heart, hands and mind indeed.
The songs on “Lonesome Sunbeam” range from folk/pop to indie/acoustic in style, with Jen’s intimate, rich and warm vocals twining it all together. Inspiration for the songs comes from the world and the people around her. Getting out of the confining box of major and minor chords, Jen experiments with open tunings and “made up” chords. Her guitar work adds a darker edge to her smooth vocals. She is joined on this record by Sara Milonovich on violin (Cathie Ryan, Richard Shindell), Jason Crigler (Linda Thompson, Marshall Crenshaw) and Adam Elk (Mommyheads) on guitars, and drummer Dan Fisherman (Mommyheads) along with several other musicians.
Jen lives with her family in New York’s Hudson Valley.
