The Compositions of David Mansbach:

"There is a folk legend of a little boy who finds in the forest a bird with a beautiful song and brings it home. He asks his father to bring food for the bird. The father doesn''t want to feed a mere bird, so he kills it. And the legend says the man killed the bird, and with the bird he killed the song, and with the song, he killed himself. He dropped dead, completely dead, and was dead forever." ~Joseph Campbell

Trepanning Trio is based around the post-classical / avant-chamber speculation of artist/musician/writer David Mansbach. Trepanning Trio''s first album "The Man Killed the Bird..." is a collection of Mansbach''s favorite works and follows a 10 year arc of his growth as a person, as an artist, and as a listener. The early works, (starting at age 22) are meticulous compositions for strings. Recent works have evolved into a series of ideas, impressions, tones, textures and creative improvisation and collaboration.

The roots of "The Man Killed the Bird..." trace back to Mansbach''s 1997 undergraduate thesis, which presented a series of existential themes through the synthesis of seemingly unrelated drawings, music, and short stories. Two of the musical sections were later translated into string compositions with the help of violinist Peter Tyson Myers. In 1998 Mansbach was asked to write the score and soundtrack for the independent film "The Language of Kickball". The Kickball recording sessions produced a collaboration which would later lead to the creation of Infinite Number of Sounds. At least one recording from the score is being digitized and re-mastered for the Trepanning Trio''s forthcoming release.

With fresh ideas and inspiration, friends and collaborators, equipment and facilities, Mansbach''s sincere enthusiasm, love and respect for music have lead him to finally complete this 10 year project.
