If a love for contrast were not the case, then guitarist/vocalist Solomon Chhiv, bassist/vocalist Reid Hemsing and drummer Mark Alberts, the current and founding members of Brooks, Alberta’s “This Tyme Last Year”, would not be who they are today. While a typical day in the hard-nose prairie town will challenge your senses with the sound of diesel engines and the smell of Canada’s most “famous” meat packing plant, you will also absorb a whirl-wind of cultures, beliefs, and ways of life. Home to dozens of native languages, the southern Alberta city can be a difficult place to call home as gaps in wealth and socio-economic status can prove confrontational at times. Within this sea of grey, This Tyme Last Year have solidified themselves as a both a complete trio and individual people, embracing the contrast and channelling it into their song writing, and their latest release, The Fall of Hayden Young.

The Fall, TTLY’s second EP released in March 2008, is a powerful example of mindful song writing mixed with raw energy. The six song EP and narrative is a bold attempt at unifying punk rock with the creative aspect of story telling. The Fall walks you through the journey of a struggling man in an uplifting, hard hitting and truly unique manner. Whether it is the fast paced, catchy hooks of “Kellington” or the gang-like bellows and numbing screams in “Ten Steps and Draw”, the Fall offers listeners a glimpse of the bands adaptability and desire to think beyond themselves. “The Mistress” and “Vultures”, the EP’s two closing tracks, also exemplify the threesomes range through a tandem of face-pounding breakdowns and ambient melodies. Finally, the trio’s heavy side is showcased in the post-hardcore anthem “Three Bandits & a Bad Idea”, the EP’s original track which laid the groundwork for the remainder of The Fall. Produced by Alex Wilkinson at Play Dead Studios in Calgary, AB, the EP brings a powerful sound filled with raw emotion. While the Fall of Hayden Young offers something special to the individual sitting down with an open CD booklet, it also offers plenty to those searching simply for a great listen. Through powerful lyrics, energetic riffs and an array of duelling vocals, The Fall is sure to bring listeners in with open arms and keep them around for more.
