In 2004 the Susanne Alt Quartet surprised the jury and audience at the Dutch Jazz Competition with their spontaneous interaction and original compositions. Earlier that year the band recorded a cd with the title "Nocturne" which was presented October 11th at the famous Bimhuis in Amsterdam.
Susanne Alt, the leader of the band and saxophone player, was born 1978 in Würzburg, Germany. Her parents, both music teachers, taught her classical piano and guitar. At the age of 12 she switched to saxophone and soon won regional and national talent prizes. In 1996 she moved to Amsterdam, The Netherlands, where she studied at the Conservatory but also started her musical career as a performing artist. After graduating she completed her studies at the UdK Berlin where she started learning composing. During the years she won jazz competitions which leaded to performances at national and international jazz festivals. Since 2000 she got it touch with house dj''s with who she recorded and toured in Benelux, Germany and France.
The other members, Thijs Cuppen (piano), Sven Schuster (bass), Klaas van Donkersgoed (drums), are well known in the Dutch jazz scene. Sven Schuster released his second cd "Shooster" in 2004 as well.
The German newspaper "Amberger Zeitung" wrote 2003 about the band and their compositions: "Young, courageous and fresh,... from aggressive to soft, from monotone to explosive".
The Dutch "Muziekwereld" 10/04 wrote about the cd "Nocturne":
" ...The music is romantic, dreamy and when the Fender Rhodes sneaks in you can visualize the smoke of diverse herbs and flavours of sweet pleasure..."
