...don''t be afraid to use your mind...
...combine your thoughts with mine...
...let''s see what we can find...
come on now, you can read the signs...
this ain''t no time for flyin'' blind...
...feel and free your mind...
...come on and shake your behind...
...use both ends of your spine...
let the music climb...
you voices true and kind...
bringing seeds of peace of mind...
......IT''S SAGIN'' TIME

--"Sagin'' Time" by Joshua Yeidel

UP ON YONDER RIDGE

can you see the light of the morning
... up on yonder ridge...

It''s an American story -- all of us emigrants from older settlements, immigrants to these open spaces, coming to love and coming to be shaped by the Palouse, this region of rolling hills, with their soft curves like recumbent women, covered once with long wild grass, now mostly planted in wheat, rising from the rocky deserts of the Columbia Basin in the west, ramping up into North Idaho''s conifer-covered mountains.

We are shaped, our music is shaped, our band and our bond are shaped in long summer sunshine and long winter dark, in great long-armed winds rolling across hundreds of miles of flat and up the foothill canyons to whisper, moan, and call at our doors, windows, and walls. Nature is still large here, the buildings and pavings are still relatively small. Music remains connected to the ridges and the winds, to the Family of Man gathered around a campfire, at a wedding, at a fair under the moon. With our family and friends close by, we know no other way than to sing our hearts and souls directly.

In place of any ambition to be heard above a city''s giant clamour, we bring a human-sized hope, seasoned both by failure and by success, that music can feed the best in all of us. If sages we be (and in the nick of time, maybe), our sagacity lies mostly in cherishing the fine web that interlaces the land and the people, the heart and the mind, and the music.
