Born in England, into immigrant Indian and Middle Eastern Jewish parents, Sarah has a british sense of humor, skin the color of an English cup of tea, and a religious heritage that seems to spill out of her pen every time she writes.
Sarah started playing in open mike nights approximately ten years ago in Miami (her hometown now) and played with renowned local guitar players Neris Gonzalez (featured on the CD) and also Patino Vazquez from Mondo Sweetie. Now, she has started exploring the piano, so is in a ''studying'' phase right now - but she has scratch recordings on her new site: https://www.tradebit.com if you would like to listen. She also has some full length recorded but not released guitar songs. Especially listen to ''Waiting for Godot'' that features Patino on lead guitar and harmony and also ''Copernicus'' - bit of a long intro, but it''s worth the wait! Anyway, back to Diaspora. A couple of songs deserve an introduction:
The Story You Wrote-#1
This song plays with the idea that most of what you hear or see is jaded by your perspective on life and your own experience. A writer writes a sentence with a certain meaning, and then you read it and find a completely different meaning in it. Sarah finds the idea amazing. The reader or listener is as much the writer as the writer!
Eve''s Song - # 2
This song was written during the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. "I read the Times and saw all the images of these women with Burkas. I just felt like crying. It seemed so perverted and I realized in an instant that these women are a result of an extreme version of the patriarchal system." Sarah said in a recent interview. "Never forget women couldn''t vote until mid-twentieth century - that''s only 50 or so years of having a say in the way a country is run - and what a struggle that was - and we have still got to keep hacking through centuries of patriarchal dogma to get to a place where there is absolute mutual respect from human to human, no matter what their gender, race or social status."
England #3
England is a song that touches everyone, especially those who live away from their homeland. It speaks of the special connection everyone has with their place of birth. It is a relationship of love and nostalgia, but most often it is not the grandiose things about the country that make your heart yearn for the past, but the little things. Like the clanging of milk bottles being dropped off outside your front door and the squeaky noise of the electric milk cart as it drives away. Like the sunday rag n'' bone men who scream as they drive up and down the road "Rag n'' bone...Rag n'' bone" to pick up any junk you may have. Like your mum giving you a hot water bottle...it''s these things that are missed.
Diaspora - # 6
This was written from the perspective of the survivors of a war or political upheaval - the subjects, who have to relocate and rebuild their lives and hold on to the parts of their culture that are alien in their new world. Ultimately, every migration to a new place of living is hard for the immigrants, harder still for the first generation who are caught between two worlds, and then much easier for the second generation who have little that is left of their original culture. It''s a sad and beautiful thing. It is the way the world evolves and changes. The song was written from the perspective of a first generation ''diapsora'' who is struggling with the difference between the culture at home and the culture in her surroundings. She is not doing a very good job of fitting in anywhere. She is questioning everything, because nothing seems to fit her perspective on things. And she is extremely brave because through her resistance she finds strength to figure things out in her own way.
