Details:
The Secondhand Band plays old-time southern music tinted noir. Theirs is roots music with a contemporary outlook - a look back to find something for our own time.
The trio came together with vastly different musical aspirations. For years Hal Cannon and Tom Carter played in bands that mostly did covers of scratchy old ''78''s so obscure that even the records surface noise got into their voices. Jim Agutter brings none of this baggage to the music and hears the songs and tunes with modernist ear. They have recently released a CD, "Cluck Cluck" on the Okehdokee label.
Tom Carter plays fiddle and a number of other instruments in the band. He was a founding member of the Rhode Island Mudflaps, played with the Fuzzy Mountain String Band while living in North Carolina, and after moving to Utah joined the Deseret String Band. Tom teaches at the University of Utah
and writes on vernacular architecture of the West. He''s a local boy.
Jim Agutter beats on resonant objects, is the lead singer in the band, and provides the group with youthful naivete. He previously screamed in several local punk bands. He too works at the University of Utah where he develops innovative real time display systems. He grew up between Salt Lake City and Winimucca, Nevada
Hal Cannon plays guitar, fife and sings and played for thirty years with the Deseret String Band. He produces documentaries for National Public Radio and public television and has published books on cowboy poetry. He grew up in Salt Lake City.
