FRENCHTOWN, NJ. -- November 26, 2003 - Trust, love, betrayal and heartbreak are key elements running through Shelton Davis''s debut record "Bittersweet and Low". Emotionally honest, the CD hits you in the heart and takes you on a ride through the landscapes of the soul. Impossible to fit into a single category, the music of Tim Shelton (guitar, bass) and Lance Davis (vocals, guitar, drums, juno-6) is as unique as it is timeless in its performance.
These two artists came together to record the album in an old art studio in Frenchtown, New Jersey. They began the project with 26 songs between them, but abandoned them when life intervened, and wrote all new material. The songs that they wrote together held all the power and mystery of what it is to love, to lose, and to attempt to regain oneself in the process. "Much of the material is based on trust, and the lack thereof, in times of uncertainty," states Davis, "trust in making the right decisions, trust in other people and mainly trusting yourself....... your gut." (Track #3) Wide Open, gently carries this thought with intimate acoustic guitars and vocals. (Track #5), Darkhorse, has an ominous guitar/drum cadence which propel the lyrical message of facing inner demons and moving through painful transitions. Someday, (track #7) sounds like Davis wrote the song, while riding in the back of an old pick up truck contemplating life and his own existance.
Bittersweet and low can be considered an album in the truest sense. Its theme runs solid and true throughout. Sheltons ambient guitar melodies underline and emphasize Davis'' powerfully authentic vocals. An acute ear could very well pick up on subtle influences of the Cure, the Smiths, Pink Floyd, and the mellow side of Bowie. Showing both the grand and base sides of human struggles of the heart, Bittersweet and Low, is at once beautiful and sweetly uplifting.
