This album is like a review of my year (2008)… One of the unique things we do as artists is take whatever happens in our lives, whatever we see or find, and process it through art. Some of these pieces are a conscious attempt to introduce musical dissonance in the form of seconds, sevenths, tritones and unexpected notes. Most are structured improvisations that work with the "things we see and find."
1 Transparency
This one’s called “Transparency” because it’s got harmonics in it. Also, transparency can be financial disclosure, openness disclosing motives, or a property of ice or water.
2 Disenfranchisement
“Finished” on election day, it’s something that expresses a lack of valid or good choices. Disenfranchisement can take many forms, from discrimination, society’s invalidation of unpopular opinions, or exclusion from actual voting through circumstance or one’s own choices, direct or indirect.
3 Ms. Orc at Her Weaving
Everybody else writes about Orcs, it’s about time I jump on the bandwagon. But really, the main motif reminds me of a weaving or spinning tune, and I go off on a tangent in the middle of the piece. Maybe the little Orcs are running around the house and tipping things over, causing chaos.
4 Dissonance
This was the attempt at dissonance that turned out more peacefully than other things.
5 Bay
A bay in the sense of a fjord, firth or inlet, with the wind blowing over it. A bay where you can see across to the other side.
6 Reverie
See #5 above.
7 Hail
The “hail” motif comes from working on a motif suggesting “frost.” It doesn’t actually show up until all the false starts have resolved themselves.
8 Thorn Apple
This is an ode to the scary plants that grew in the yard this summer. I eventually reconciled with them since they had beautiful and scented flowers, even if they had imposing jagged leaves and other unseemly qualities. This piece illustrates Thorn Apples swaying in the late summer breeze, when both flowers and fruit are present on the plant.
9 Birds
The opening motif will always represent sparrows for me.
10 Frost Flowers
Another outgrowth of the “frost” motif, this is partly based on the odd pictures of “Frost Flowers” found in Wikipedia.
11 Abstinence
I had trouble finding a title that fit this slow, introspective piece that is either lacking or searching for something.
12 Contemplation
This piece is thinking about a happy prospect or sense of renewal. It’s not really a consideration of an offer, more of a “that would be nice” sort of thought.
13 Subsumption
Another piece where the title got fit to the nebulous concept after the piece was finished. It’s not really sublimation, where energy meant for one psychological task goes into another; nor is it sublimation as ice turns to steam, nor subduction as plates are buried under continents; so I settled on subsumption, which in this case is the gerund form of subsume, as in “to include as part of a larger category or group.” Possibly, the group of things with drones.
14 Renaissance
Something that reminded me of a renaissance melody in part.
15 Dance
Something that reminded me of a dance form, I’m not sure what one.
16 Flight
This connects to the “sparrows” motif found earlier.
17 Revisiting
This revisits the motif from “Passing Feeling.” It works as what generated “Passing Feeling” was revisited this year.
18 Fragments
An improvisation that combines fragments of everything else, plus things I don’t remember playing and didn’t intend.
