Details:
Starlight Drive is the work of DC indie songwriter Jared Featherstone in collaboration with several similarly afflicted friends. The songs are contemplative and sometimes dark, but always seem to have a hopeful thread holding everything together. Acoustic guitars are balanced by the atmosphere of subtle keyboards and backing vocals. A practicing fiction writer, Featherstone brings a literary element to the lyrics, weaving in images and ideas that provoke thought without weighing down the songs.

Reviews by press and fans have compared Starlight Drive to Elliott Smith, My Bloody Valentine, Death Cab for Cutie, Red House Painters, Pernice Brothers, Slowdive, and Magnet.

Featherstone was one of the founders of long-running D.C. shoegaze/powerdrone band Zoothead, who was signed to D.C.’s hip DeepReverb Records in 1996, releasing two full-length CDs and a 7-inch single. More recently, he played with D.C. heroes Washington Social Club, who were signed to Badman Records and had songs placed on HBO, ABC, and the CW. The Social Club toured or performed with bands like Stars, All American Rejects, Hot Hot Heat, Presidents of the USA, Matthew Sweet, Walkmen, and Electric Six. They’ve played in festivals featuring Coldplay, Foo Fighters, The Cure, Jay-Z, Interpol, Good Charlotte, Billy Idol, and made appearances on MTV and the Carson Daly show on NBC.

After spending over decade making music in the nation’s capitol, Featherstone continues to develop as an indie singer/songwriter. He is currently recording material for the follow-up to his 2005 self-release, “Beautiful Accidents.”

The Flowers of Damiana is an EP of songs written by Featherstone and recorded in 2002 (originally known as the Nine Songs from Hell EP, but never released). At that time, the band was known as Damiana, though these songs remained fixtures of the Starlight Drive set. The line-up included Evan Featherstone on bass and backing vocals, and Mike Dombrowski on drums. The EP was recorded by Davis White at Soundcamera studios in Fairfax, VA. The EP was mastered by Randy Scope in 2008 in Silver Spring, MD.

Damiana is a medicinal plant known for enhancing sexual experiences. When smoked, it is said to cause lucid dreaming. It has also been known to treat depression. In addition to all of this, the plant produces flowers.

These songs have been buried for years for many reasons, but they are ready to be unearthed. These are a bit more edgy and rough that some of the later Starlight Drive material, but I think you’ll make the necessary connections. One of the songs from this group, “Hiding,” appeared on the Starlight Drive release “Beautiful Accidents.”

Here are the lyrics for anyone interested:

Nothing is Sacred:
Turn your eyes to me
and feel the floor fall away
I don’t mean to make it hard
to find something sacred
that stays that way every day

Why should you have to prove
the way it makes sense to you?

Should have never turned that page
Should have never heard you say
You fooled me, again

You ruined my afternoon
Now nothing is sacred but you

Impact Worship:

It’s not like we won’t live
to see another night
But still it’s leading up to bliss

Channel your creativity into one fling

Is it over before it starts?
It’s over before too long,
but we’ll come back again.

The two become one
but they worry too much
to have a good time

Don’t ever fake it for me
or anyone else
Don’t think too much

It’s over before this song,
but we’ll come back again.

The Face Last Seen:

The face last seen was one of terror and beauty,
moving through the crowd
It makes them nervous,
and they don’t know where to put their hands.

You can turn away, make a joke,
disguise the fact that your power
has been choked

Your stomach is bottomless,
but you want to be full.
Oh no, here’s another one

Now feel the loss of someone you never had

Luxury:

Luxury suspension of disbelief
makes for a smooth ride

Plenty of window space
so you can see the world
without going outside

The signs, distracted faces
The hopes
You can’t go fast enough for me

The machine won’t stop
until it breaks down
It doesn’t know better,
flying around, shining and bright

Turn the radio all the way up
so we can’t hear ourselves anymore
Make it louder than the others
so they can hear what we had to say.

Blind Faith:

There’s a blind faith in everything
It comes and goes
From where? To where?
I don’t know.

Gift or a gag, it pushes me,
stumbling on

Is that what you call god?
Faceless voice in the sky?

There’s a blind faith in someone
Don’t worry, they say
He has a plan

They send him letters to feel better
but no one ever answers

People and weather can always bring
the day to a sudden end

The beaming face of defeat
