The Music:

Three songs from ‘Siete Canciones Populares Españolas’ by Manuel De Falla. These brief songs span an emotional range as varied as the Iberian landscape - from the fierce passions of the joys and pains of love (El Paño Moruno), the tender intimacy of a mother’s lullaby (Nana) to the seductions rhythms of loss (Jota). Originally for voice and piano, the artists have painstakingly arranged the works for violin and guitar. In many instance, Mr. Larget-Caplan has added flamenco elements to the performance to bring them closer to their traditional flamenco roots though with complete respect to the masters notation.

Revolutionary of the Argentine Tango, Astor Piazzolla was a 13- year-old bandoneon prodigy born in Argentina to Italian parents and raised in New York. Bordel 1900 (Brothel 1900) comes from the larger suite Histoire du Tango (History of the Tango) originally for flute and guitar. The work is a snap shot of the flirtatious and vivacious nightlife of Buenos Aires, Argentina at the turn of the last century. Unlike many classical recordings of this piece Diablo y Tango adds a number of ornaments and musical effects were created by the artists to bring out the tango’s folk-gypsy origins and that are inherent in their instruments. All done with great respect to the genius of Astor Piazzolla

The Group:
Diablo y Tango performs Spanish, Gypsy, and Contemporary works alongside classical masterpieces by Bach, Paganini, Gershwin, Piazzolla, and more. This demo is a taste of the wilder side of classical music. The Armenian Weekly said of their recent performance: “Bordel 1900 issued a sweet, sonata quality that lingered in the air like the “ruddy-skinned pears” of Richard Wilbur’s “A Late Aubade” and “Café 1930” glowed with all the raucous tempo of a wild Marseille night in interwar Europe.”

The Artists:
Called “a riveting artist” by G. Acosta of the Washington Post, classical guitarist Aaron Larget-Caplan rides the razor’s edge of the guitar. Founder of the New Lullaby Project, which has commissioned over a dozen New Lullabies from composers throughout the US. Aaron juxtaposes new and traditional repertoire into exciting and thought provoking programs for concert audiences & educational enrichment (schools). He released his debut album, ‘Tracing a wheel on water’ in 2006. His second CD of solos from the New Lullaby Project is due out in 2009. Aaron has performed in Spain, Italy and on both US coasts. Born in the classical guitar capital of Oklahoma and raised in Colorado, Aaron graduated from the New England Conservatory in Boston where he studied with Eliot Fisk & David Leisner. His main teacher is Dmitry Goryachev. He currently lives and teaches in Cambridge, Massachusetts. More info at https://www.tradebit.com
