Skull Baby is best described as "serial killer deathrock." The music of Skull Baby is heavy, horrific deathrock, and portrays a world of isolation, depravity, lust, religious conviction, and a personal armageddon. Influenced by gothic rock and black metal, the band produces eerie and disturbing melodic tunes accompanied by poetic and unnerving lyrics. Hailing from Columbia, South Carolina, the extreme and original music of this band stick out like a sore thumb.
Skull Baby is fronted by singer/screamer and lyricist Toby Bubonic, followed by tunesmith Henry Wayne Cul de Sac on guitar, bassist Joey Murder, Festus on drums, and the mischievious Bubbles on keys. The concept of Skull Baby was created by Toby Bubonic in 1995 as a piece of artwork, and did not become a band until the three hundred thirty-third day of the year of our Lord, 1999.
The live shows of Skull Baby are outrageous and unpredictable. Seeing Skull Baby play live is an experience all on its own, and one that will never be forgotten. This band has a reputation of making athiests want to go to church after attending one of their shows. Skull Baby has played with bands such as Fear, The Frankenstein Drag Queens (pre Murderdolls), Ghoultown and Bile.
The band''s rehearsal sessions take place in an old abandoned, decomposing mobile home in the woods. Practice is lit by one lamp and a water damaged picture of Jesus. Festus had almost fallen through the floor on several occasions while playing drums. But it''s the smell of sweat, blood and rotting wood that keeps the band on a creative high.
All members of Skull Baby are original members of the band, though the band has had three temporary fill-in members. Two of those members had left the band early and both confessed that God had spoken to them and told them to leave the band.
Skull Baby is earning their reputation as one of the most original and controversial acts to have come out of the music scene in a long time. To sum it up in the simplest way, Skull Baby is "the Pride of the Bible Belt."
